St. Valentine's Ledger

Patron: Elliot Finch

Date: Aug 2nd, 1923 – Gold Coast District

Location: St. Valentine's

Proprietor: Glass-Eyes

You always did talk like regret was a song you could hum your way out of. I worry one day you won't be able to.

I read your little note, Nickels.

Crumpled up and gin-soaked, but still legible enough. I had Agatha transcribe it for me. If you're going to be doing work for St. Valentine's, and if I'm going to be paying you so damn well to do it, you'd best at least write down your thoughts inside the ledger. For record keeping, you know. I am nothing if not meticulous about it. You get one chance to be clever. Just one. If you bungle this case up, if you get the fuzz breathing down my neck, if you so much as wink at that ██████ of yours, you're done. Got it?

In any case, I don't mind you dealing with ██████. I don't trust that place for the same reasons I don't trust you. ███████ made some real rotten deals and saddled them all on poor ████ and ████. Not that I prefer dealing with the ██████, but that little furball ain't too bad. Been around here long enough to know its place at least.

See, the ██████ don’t look like anything in particular. That’s what makes it so hard to deal with for most folks. Your eyes try to stitch it together, but the threads keeps snapping. One arm, ████████. ██████████, maybe. No ████, no sir, just a █████ where a memory ought to be.

Lucky then that I can't see much to begin with.

Of course, I don't strongly think he's what done this. Not his style. Not his type. Certainly not willing to step ██████████ into my establishment and pull this kind of shit. But he knows the other types of patrons who might be fluttering by. He's tuned into this type of stuff, you know. Little errand boy of the big man down south. So, let's see if he's willing to talk or otherwise end up ███████.

Unsmudge the Ledger

"First a Parisian Sparkler, second a sip of Sour Highball, then a second shot of a Violet Flight, followed fourth by a Creole Classic. Quite the tab already, eh, Nickels?"
