That was it. No signature. Just the initial. But I know who sent it.
The Deschamps Matron doesn’t waste time with pleasantries. If she’s written, it means the █████ are drawn and the ████ have already begun turning in their graves. The █████ are being prepared. I can already smell the █████ and █████, sweet like molasses but sharp like scorched hair. And then there's the sweat and heat of the swamps clinging to your every inch. It won’t be a pleasant trip, that much is certain.
I’ve made what arrangements I could. Should my prayers be heard and answered, we’ll leave tomorrow through a ████████ to Baton Rouge. If not, there are other ways to cross the country, though I fear we are short on time. Once in the bayou it’ll be a swamp boat paid for in blood and bourbon. A quiet ride, but a safe one, to the Deschamps manor.
This next part won’t be clean. Won’t be soft. Louisiana █████ never is. It crawls in through your pores and settles in your teeth. It knows your sins before you do.
But if we want to know how to stop Gallowsbridge from rising, I fear we don’t have many other choices. We need to go where the ███████████ still answer. Only sufficiently ███████████ can barter and bend the rules of the ████████.
And the Deschamps?
Believe it or not, they’ve dealt with worse. The Old Voodoo Families of New Orleans are powerful guardians in the eternal struggle between light and darkness. The Deschamps— alongside the Belleroses, Fontenots, Delacroixs, Broussards, Blackwoods, Mireauxs, LaGranges, Baptistes, Ramses, Doucets, Marchands, and Rocheauxs—they’ve all bent things that should never bend. If anyone can tell us what Nickels’ songs may bring, it would be them.
