Came back to my establishment this morning to find not one wet cat but two. Just my luck.
Nickels was already at the booth. Hair a mess. Grin rehearsed. I offered him a cup of coffee but he don't drink the strong stuff this early in the morning, just a glass of gin will do him. And he brought with him… Father Voss.
Not a man I trust.
But, not a man I would so easily dismiss either. He has an air about him. Old stones and burnt offerings. Turns out you boys figured it out what I already wrung from the patron down near Enfield. Scratch's city, it's not fully complete. It's missing its other half. Which, if Voss is right, is currently somewhere beneath Lake Michigan herself. Though, I think we would've noticed a whole city down there, don't you think?
Turns out it's sunken in more than one way. I'm not the one to get into the specifics of this bullshit. All that matters is that the other half of that hellish city is here. It's not tangible, not to your eyes… but perhaps mine'll do the trick? Lake Michigan is one big reflection after all. I just need to catch it at the right angle.
Now, so far as our body goes, the hack who got twisted up in my establishment, Elliot Finch. I can't say I've fully squared that case away. Not yet. I still don't know why he was trying to do Nickels in, though at this point I think I could wager a guess. Finch somehow knew that Nickels is the one who will bring this other half of Scrach’s city back to the surface. "Gallowsbridge," as Voss calls it. Now how did Finch learn about this? From his new master, of course. If my Patron of the south ain't just chompin' baloney, Finch got in with a higher power.
But one master don't take kindly to another edging in on their prized canary, do they?
Which brings me back to our new main issue at hand: Nickels Costigan—the yellow Canary whose song will raise a city from the depths.
