Forming a Sigil

TAUR01 – No. 17

Sigils, Sigilmancy, Sigilcraft, or any variant thereof, is the most fundamental principle of common standardized magical practice. Any belief system can utilize sigils to influence the Flipside, Otherside, and beyond. Not only are sigils somewhat universal, but they are also easy to construct and easy to “activate” in a sense. Of course, as with all magic, sigils do carry a risk with utilizing them though risk often outweighs the reward. Sigils are also very adaptable and can serve practically any purpose. Most commonly in the Cafe and Diner, sigils are used to temporarily open weak spots in the boundary lines to send customers home.

But first, what exactly is a sigil, and what is it doing? A sigil is a drawing often encased in a circle. The drawing is often derived from a word or phrase the magician wants to impart into the sigil. For example, let’s make a simple sigil of good luck. For this, I would choose a word that resonates with good luck to me. Perhaps “Chance” will do, yes? Now how you proceed with this word or phrase is up to you, though I personally prefer removing all repeating letters, giving us C-H-A-N-E. Some may also like to remove vowels, though I find that vowels add the right amount of “spice.” Now, we take the letters C-H-A-N-E and form them into a symbol as such:

Next comes the stylization. This will further obscure and remove the letters from their original meaning into a meaning better processed on a subconscious level. Horseshoes are often considered good luck, no? And this already looks like a horseshoe. So let us stylize it as such and place it in a circle. You don’t have to put your sigils within a circle. The circle, in a way, “insulates” your sigil. Keeping your magic safe from other sources of magic and keeping you safe from your own subconscious energy.

And there we have it. A very simple sigil of good luck. Now, how do we get this to work? Well, for a neophyte to the mystic arts, all that needs to be done now is to “lose it.” Yes, lose it. Cast away this sigil from your conscious mind. You need your subconscious mind to act on it; you can’t do that if you consciously engage with it. Easier said than done, I know. For a more advanced magic user who is more in tune with their subconscious already, you should be able to fire this sigil directly to your subconscious to actively call on its power.
