Limbo

VIRGO01 – No. 2

Limbo, also sometimes referred to as the Backrooms, the Liminal, or even the Behindside, is the largest "plane" known to exist. That being said, it does not exist within the Universe, as it is part of the Topside. In fact, it is the majority of the Topside and the oldest known place in all of existence. Before there was a Universe, before there was a Court of Angels, before there was life itself, there was Limbo. Mysteriously, however, Limbo is entirely devoid of life. At least it is assumed that no man nor beast lives in Limbo, though due to its impossible size and non-Euclidean structure, it is impossible to say for certain.

How one ends up in Limbo is a complete mystery, even to the powers that be. As Limbo predates creation, it also supersedes any universal laws, logic, or magic. While the Black Tide is often regarded as the most secure prison outside of the Universe, it could be argued that ending up in Limbo is a bleaker fate. What we know about Limbo is that the Universe itself seems to utilize Limbo as a sort of "error overflow." When things go up that should go down, they might end up spontaneously in Limbo.

The only known entity to exist in Limbo is the Bird. Though two former Cafe and Diner employees, Nicole Langley and Seth Warren, spent approximately a year in Limbo. Additionally, myself and No. 5 have ventured briefly into the Liminal to try and retrieve them. From what we saw and were told, Limbo is an endless slide show showing various empty vignettes of life, both mundane and spectacular. You can spend as long as you like anyone "scene," though once you leave, you can never turn back. And most notably, if you stare too long in one direction, Limbo's synthetic nature becomes more apparent. Seth described it to me as being able to see past the façade of the Universe and into the truth of reality.
